Author Interview

Author: Kyrie Wang

Introduction:

I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the capital of Canada's trilingualism (21% of us speak 3 languages, myself included)! Roughly every other week, I take a plane to a small mining town up north where I work like crazy as a physician (I'm a pathologist). Then I return home and write while my daughter is at school, my husband is at work, and I have no chores to do. It's not that much time, unfortunately!

When did your writing journey begin? Was there a catalyst that got you going?

I wrote my first novel, a fanfiction of The Boxcar Children series, in 3rd grade. My "catalyst" for writing came from being ignored by my parents. I entertained myself by writing many Pokemon and other video game fanfics throughout my childhood and teens. The Enemy's Keeper series is the first all-original series I've written. I wrote the prequel, called Seeker, back in high school. However, I'm no longer proud of that prequel and it's no longer available for sale (but fear not, because I wrote another one!)

What made you choose the genre(s) that you write in?

I choose to write in the young adult genre because:

1) Adults of all ages read YA (not just teens!)

2) YA should not have triggering content such as explicit sex, violence and rape, and profuse profanity. Readers expect this of the YA genre and I also want to write stories within these expectations.

3) YA books are perfectly capable of exploring timeless themes such as loyalty, forgiveness, and redemption. These are the core themes of the Enemy’s Keeper Series.

Finally, I write YA because I can’t wait for my daughter Ariane to read my work. She is only 7, but my youngest reader so far was only 11. Ariane will be old enough before I know it!

 Hobbies/other interests?

I'm also an artist!  When I had more time in my teens, I drew my novel's characters. The secondary characters in the Enemy's Keeper series, such as Kato, Evelyn and Aelfric, have been with me since my high school days. Here are some illustrations of them.               Kato, Evelyn and Mils, the donkey

Kato met the two girls, Evelyn and Marie, while they pretended to be mute beggars on the streets of medieval England.

Nowadays, I prefer doing a rough sketch of my characters and hiring professional freelance artists to turn them into digital art. You can check out the Enemy's Keeper Series art gallery at KyrieWang.com/art

Tell me about your latest book and what inspired you to write it:

I outlined The Thief’s Keeper (An Enemy's Keeper Prequel) last spring while mourning the loss of two friends whose funerals were on the same weekend. In the novel, a runaway thrall (slave) named Aelfric collides with a thief who is stricken by a mysterious disease. Aelfric must decide between escaping England as a runaway slave or staying behind to save her. His response to existential questions, woven into the narrative, reflected my processing of grief. At the same time, The Thief's Keeper is fast-paced, features some humor, and is light enough for a YA audience.

Aliwyn's happy ending was my way of imagining a different outcome for my friends. Of all the novels I’ve written since elementary school, The Thief’s Keeper provides the most commentary on my struggles with my faith in God as I grappled with loss and the “unfairness” of it all.

Ultimately, I finished the manuscript with a new appreciation for every blessing in life, great or small. I hope readers will be inspired to feel the same.
