Queen Velu Nachiyar was a remarkable queen from Tamil Nadu who defied British rule long before the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Alongside her trusted commander Veera Mangai Kuyili, a brave Dalit woman, she orchestrated a cunning plan that would cripple the British forces and render them unable to fight back.

In 1780, Queen Velu Nachiyar and her forces were in exile after her husband was killed by the British in the Battle of Kalaiyar Koil. Determined to reclaim her kingdom, she sought a strategic advantage against the British. It was during this time that she devised a daring plan, utilizing the strength and courage of women.

Queen Velu Nachiyar understood that the British stored their ammunition inside a well-guarded fort. She knew that to defeat the British, she needed to neutralize their weapons. With Veera Kuyili's assistance, they hatched an audacious plot. On the auspicious day of Vijayadasami, a day that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, Queen Velu and her army disguised themselves as worshippers. Hidden within their clothes were concealed weapons. The plan was to infiltrate the British fort under the pretense of paying homage at the temple.

Veera Kuyili, a fearless and determined warrior, played a crucial role in the plan. As the procession of women entered the fort, Kuyili had doused herself in ghee, a highly flammable substance. At the opportune moment, she ignited herself and made a selfless sacrifice by detonating the hidden cache of weapons and ammunition within the fort. The explosion was devastating, shattering the British forces' ability to retaliate. Chaos ensued as the British soldiers scrambled to regain control. This strategic blow dealt by Queen Velu Nachiyar and Veera Mangai Kuyili left the British vulnerable and demoralized. With their arsenal destroyed, the British had no choice but to surrender to the resolute Queen Velu Nachiyar. Recognizing her valor and leadership, they pleaded for mercy, promising not to interfere in Sivagangai's affairs. In a remarkable display of magnanimity, Queen Velu Nachiyar spared the life of Captain Benjour, the British officer in charge.

This daring plot led by Queen Velu Nachiyar and executed with unwavering resolve by Veera Mangai Kuyili stands as a testament to their strategic brilliance and unwavering dedication to freeing their homeland from foreign oppression. Their ingenuity and sacrifice played a pivotal role in the fight against British colonialism, long before it gained widespread attention.

The remarkable tale of Queen Velu Nachiyar and Veera Mangai Kuyili serves as a reminder of the many unsung heroes who fought for India's freedom. Their bravery and strategic acumen continue to inspire generations, highlighting the importance of recognizing and honoring the contributions of women in history.
